There are nine anthropomorphized cat emojis available, perhaps to represent the “nine lives” cats are said to possess! There is no real convincing explanation as to why cats feature so prominently in today’s pantheon of emojis; however, these cat face emojis do pre-date Unicode and were recognizable to Japanese users long before most in the West were introduced to emojis of any kind! The cats are usually orange or yellow, though Samsung and LG have taken a departure from this and use a grey cat with visible, darker stripes. Its mouth is open in a large grin and is used to express delight and happiness, particularly to good news.
